ARTISTIC RENAISSANCE IN AURORA AND THE FOX RIVER VALLEY

In its inaugural season, 1999-2000, Musical Arts Aurora - MAA -offers something of excellence for people of all ages and musical backgrounds - children, youth, and adults; experienced in music or not.

Exciting concerts, ensembles and educational opportunities abound, all under the direction of an outstanding staff in a friendly environment.

Located in Aurora, this community based organization seeks to provide new opportunities for people throughout the Fox River Valley.

Fox River Chorale

A non-auditioned community choir for men and women of high-school age or older who read music. Offering two major concerts this season, one in December and one in May, the choir's repertoire spans centuries and styles from sacred choral masterworks to lighter Broadway fare. Under the direction of well known musician, composer and conductor Philip Spencer, this group will offer the opportunity to sing in Carnagie Hall, New York City in the Spring of 2001.

Meets Mondays at 7:45-9:00 pm at the address below. Tuition is $25/ semester plus music.


Fox River Children's Choir

Research has shown that children's participation in a musical ensemble can have positive benefis in nearly all other areas of life. This choir is open to girls and boys with unchanged voices in grades 3-8. Under the direction of Philip Spencer, the repertoir will include classical music, folk songs, and popular music from Broadway and films. A variety of performance opportunities is expected.

Meets Mondays from 6:15-7:30 pm at the address below. Tuition is $15/semester plus music.

Musical Arts String Academy

Under director Peter Case, the String Academy offers private violin, viola, cello and double bass lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes in length from beginning to advanced ability, depending on the student's needs. Instruction is in the traditional method and will expose students to music of various styles. Performance opportunities throughout the year will be available to all students.

A professional string quartet, QUARTET CAPRICE, is in residence at the Adademy and available for performances.

Music Therapy Institute: A Center for Healing and Wholeness

Under the direction of Mary Helen Ekstam, Certified Music Therapist, the Center for Healing and Wholeness is designed to assist anyone who is dealing with an illness or injury, recovery, or anyone who has a loved one experiencing a variety of issues that may need assistance in coping skills. Also, due to the powerful effect music has on our lives, music therapy is a wonderful mechanism to help with relaxation and with reducing stress and anxiety. Programs for all ages from infants to the elderly.

Director Philip Spencer, has an extensive background in conducting, composing and arranging choral music including a Masters of Music degree from Yale University School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music. He has done doctoral study at the University of Iowa and completed a year of study in conducitng, organ and composition in Berlin, Germany. Mr. Spencer has served as a full-time parish musician in congregatons in Ohio, Minnesota and Ilinois and also served as Chair of the music department and Director of Choral Activities at Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1985 Mr Spence founded the Edina Chorale, a community choir and chamber choir based in the Minneapolis area. He has conducted community choirs and children's choral festival choirs in Columbus, Des Moines, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Oak Park and Naperville. A noted organist and jazz pianist, Mr. Spencer is uniquely qualified to help MAA be the next step in bringing artistic renaissance to Aurora and the neighboring communities of the Fox River Valley.

FUTURE OFFERINGS will include: "Bridge to Music" concert series, Perc UP! percussion ensemble for youth and Creative Spirit Arts Summer Camp.
